Ski holidays in Switzerland

For crisp clean air and some of the most spectacular scenery you’re sure to witness, Switzerland is the perfect holiday destination. Located in Western Europe and land-locked, it’s bordered by five countries including Germany and France and Italy, all of which are common languages used throughout Switzerland. For that reason, the country has no linguistic identity but is instead defined and united by its iconic beauty and culture.

The sunniest of the Swiss cantons, Grimentz is a charming and unspoilt mountain village with stunning views of the Imperial Crown peaks of Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Obergabelhorn, Dent-Blanche and the Matterhorn from its pistes.

  • St Moritz

Well known for being one of the most expensive ski resorts in the world, St Moritz is just a few kilometres from the highest summit of the Eastern Alps, Piz Bernina and surrounded by the high peaks of the Engadine Valley. With immaculate pistes, glitzy shops, hotels, and bars, St Moritz is a resort to see and be seen in.

Geographically Switzerland is made up of three parts. The Swiss Plateau stretches from Lake Geneva in the south west up to Lake Constance in the north east and is a mix of flat and hilly landscape. Here you will find a good two thirds of the country’s population as it houses the main bulk of both business and farming industries, whilst in contrast the Jura region is predominantly a mass of ancient limestone dating back to the Jurassic period.

The Alps however are the most recognised part of Switzerland and make up over two thirds of its land mass resulting in this area being where most of the tourism industry is based. Imagine the Alps and all thoughts conjured tend to be spot on; snow-capped mountains, clear blue skies and deep blue lakes are just some of the valid clichés…

All the above play their part in making Switzerland the ideal location for an outdoor break. In the summer hiking and mountain biking are two popular pastimes whilst in the winter it’s all about the snow and with some of the finest resorts in the world it’s no wonder Switzerland is such a popular place with skiers and other winter sport enthusiasts.
